New Outlook For Kumho Sport Saloon Series PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 June 2010 19:06

Kumho Sport Saloon SeriesThe 2010/2011`season of the Kumho Sport Saloons series is shaping up to be one of the best race seasons in recent years.

After some changes to the rules at the recent AGM, sequential gearboxes have been banned returning the series back towards the low budget saloon series that it was always intended to be. The rules have also been also been altered to allow more of the club orientated vehicles to become eligible, by allowing more freedom in engine transplants for cars up to 2 litre turbo while still allowing the 3 litre turbo’s to run. An all new level of parity is hoped to be achieved between all the competitors with new weight limits for the turbo cars implemented and a new narrower tyre size rule for the 4wd cars which aims to limit the amount of horsepower that is able to be put to the ground. This is hoped to make the 2wd and 4wd cars battle it out on the track rather than in the cheque book. Non turbo cars are also still eligible with engines of up to 6 litre capacity, with some of the N/A cars performing well last year, they could also be in the running for the title chases.

With most of last years competitors looking to stay with the class, and a few new cars planning on running this season, racing numbers are hoped to be up on last year and with over 100 race entries last season, this season looks to be the most closely contested series in years. There are at least 10 competitors from last year that look to be in with a chance of taking the overall honours this year, and add in a few new competitors to the mix and the title is wide open. There are also the 4 classes within sport saloons and these look as though they will be closely fought out between all the competitors.

With the class returning back towards lower budget orientated cars, the series organizers are hoping to attract some of the regular club level racers, who see the new sport saloons as the next logical step up from club racing and clubsport events.

With a new committee and new series personnel now running the class, and now back to running a 6 round series with 2 rounds at each of the South Island tracks, and a possibility of a inter-island challenge with one of the North Island classes, the 2010/2011 Kumho Sport Saloon series is in a very good position to become the South Islands biggest race series.
