Upper Hutt Porsche GT3 racer Simon McLennan came tantalisingly close to championship honours in his class of the Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup at the final round at Taupo last weekend.
McLennan, in just his first season in the category, led the Mothers 996 Cup category by 16 points from experienced campaigner Hugh Gardiner as the duo arrived to battle it out at Taupo and after the first race on Saturday afternoon it appeared that Simon would become the champion 24 hours later.
However cruel luck on the second day of the event saw McLennan finish runner-up in the championship he had led since the second round in November. However he has made a huge impression after making the daunting step from the MINI Challenge Series to the ultra-fast and completely different Porsche Cup cars with a season beyond even his own expectations.

Six consecutive championship titles is a record few sportsmen or women could comprehend let alone claim yet that's what racing driver Craig Baird achieved at the final round of this season's Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge championship at the Taupo Motorsport Park on Sunday.
In the seven years a Porsche GT3 Cup-based championship series has been contested in New Zealand only one other driver - Jim Richards - has won it, Baird taking over the mantle of man to beat in 2005 and stoutly defending it ever since.
Having amassed a 182 point lead heading into this weekend's final series round at MotorSport New Zealand's Hydraulink Grand Finals meeting at Taupo, 39-year-old Hamilton-born but now Gold Coast, Queensland-based driver Baird was the definite favourite to claim a record sixth Porsche title.
But he still had to start and finish all three races - quite some ask considering the fact that for a second consecutive season he has been running a parallel - and equally successful - campaign in the BNT NZV8s class.

A win in the final race of the 2009/10 Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge cemented Triple X Motorsport’s third consecutive championship victory with Craig Baird securing an unprecedented sixth title at Taupo this weekend.
The 39-year-old’s 24th New Zealand title, Baird extended his all-time streak to 25 when he also won the V8 touring car title as well, at the final round of the summer race season.
Consolidating his points lead in the Sunday morning race with a third placing, Baird in the Mad Butcher ZM Porsche 997 started the season finale from the front row alongside Triple X Motorsport team-mate David Reynolds.
“I told the team early I wanted to go out and annihilate everyone,” said an animated Baird of his plan for the season.

Jonny Reid was the big winner on the first day of competition at the final round of this season's Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge in Taupo, turning the tables on fastest qualifier David Reynolds and champion-elect Craig Baird to claim victory in the opening race.
Series rookie Reid, the former kart and international single-seat series race winner, claimed his first Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge race and round win at the penultimate round of the 2009/10 series at Feilding's Manfeild circuit last month and continued on his winning way today, joining Reynolds on the front row of the grid then capitalising on a lightning quick pit stop to win the 30-lap/100 km The Mad Butcher mini-enduro race from Daniel Gaunt, Matt Halliday and championship points leader Craig Baird.
First home in the Mothers 996 Cup category meanwhile was Wellington's Simon McLennan from season-long rival Hugh Gardiner with Simon Evans third and Gene Rollinson fourth.

Triple X Motorsport driver Craig Baird finished today’s 100 kilometre Mad Butcher Porsche race 0.3 of a second away from securing the 2009/10 Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge title at Taupo.
The final of six rounds by the six car Auckland based team, Baird’s 182 point lead in the championship standings was reduced to 140 with two 75 point races left to run in the weekend.
Finishing fourth overall having spent an hour aboard a V8 touring car before the Porsche endurance race, Baird said the demands were unnecessary given what is at stake.
“To be fair I can’t believe the two sessions are back-to-back. I have to hurry between one car and getting in to the next so I don’t miss getting out on to the track before they close the pit lane,” said Baird having climbed from his right-hand-drive Ford to get in to the left-hand-drive Porsche before today’s race. “I’ve done two championships for two years and it’s not getting fairer. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to consider putting another race between them.”
