With just one round remaining Wellington Porsche GT3 racer Simon McLennan will lead his class of the Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup into the final round at Taupo next month. McLennan, in just his first season in the category, leads the Mothers 996 Cup category by 16 points from experienced campaigner Hugh Gardiner. McLennan grabbed the lead of the series at the second round in Christchurch in November where he took his first round win in only his second drive in the class. This past weekend at Manfeild in Feilding he added another round win in yet another impressive performance in his New World Metro On Willis Porsche GT3 996. McLennan began the weekend at Manfeild by setting the fastest qualifying time in the class in a close battle with Aucklander Gardiner. Qualifying took place in dry condititons but rain arrived as McLennan and his fellow competitors were preparing for the first race late on Saturday afternoon. The change in weather and track conditions were of little consequence to the young rookie as he drove impressively in the wet conditions to win the class from series newcomer, the internationally experienced Gene Rollinson, Simon Evans and main championship rival Gardiner. |

Aucklander Jonny Reid is the latest Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge championship round winner after edging out David Reynolds and series points leader Craig Baird at Feilding's Manfeild motor racing circuit over the weekend.
Heading into the meeting, the fifth of sixth on the 2009/10 Battery Town calendar, defending series champion Craig Baird had a 135 point lead over long-time rival Matt Halliday with Daniel Gaunt third and Reid fourth.
After claiming the final step of the podium this weekend Baird has retained his lead in the series points standings heading into the final 2009/10 round at the Taupo Motorsport Park in a month's time. But a horror weekend for Halliday has seen the now US-based international slip to fourth in the overall rankings behind Baird, Reid and Daniel Gaunt.
With Reid, Gaunt was one of two fresh faces on the top step of the podium at this weekend's round, with David Reynold's making the most of treacherous track conditions to win the first race of the weekend on Sunday then Reid and Gaunt claiming a win apiece on Sunday.

Triple X Motorsport driver David Reynolds took a convincing win in this weekend’s first of three races at the series penultimate round of the Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge being held at Manfeild.
Starting from the front row in steady rain, Reynolds in the #8 Hampsta Indians bar Porsche 997 got the better start for the 12-lap race around the 3.03 kilometre circuit – a lead he continually extended to the chequered flag.
“We got a good start, Matt Halliday got a bit of a jump, but I got the better drive and got in to turn one leading. So I put my head down; got a few good laps in early and saved my tyres – taking the win,” said Reynolds.
Although the 24-year-old Melbourne based driver had a distracting build-up to the race when the in-board air-jack in his car failed as the team were putting it on the ground.

Muscling to the lead early in today's final 16-lap top-six reverse grid Porsche GT3 Cup race at Manfeild allowed Auckland based V8 Supercar driver Daniel Gaunt his first victory with the Triple X Motorsport team.
The penultimate round in the 2009/10 Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, Gaunt stole the lead position bestowed upon team principal for the afternoon race, leading the field through the first turns and on to the chequered flag.
"I'm happy I held on there in the end - it was great to get back in the winner's circle, but we've got a bit of work to do with our pace here at Manfeild," cautioned Gaunt after the win.
"Jonny Reid has been driving well, so we had to get the better start and keep everyone behind us." |

Matt Halliday might have pipped him for pole position but it was fellow front row starter David Reynolds who won the first Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge race of the weekend at the penultimate round of the 2009/10 championship at Feilding's Manfeild motor racing circuit this afternoon.
With championship points leader Craig Baird back in fifth place after the morning's qualifying session - held in cool, blustery but dry conditions - the afternoon's 12 lap race looked set to be about who would finish second to points runner-up Halliday.
The rain that had threatened all afternoon finally started falling as the Battery Town GT3 Cup cars lined up on the dummy grid however and when Halliday's car bogged off the line Reynolds grabbed a lead he was not to lose.
