Grant Tregoning Secures Southland Solo Championship Title PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 29 March 2010 18:23

UNTOUCHABLE: Oreti Park's Grant Tregoning leads Paul Hayes, of Invercargill, Anthony Knowles, Andy Aldridge, both of Christchurch, and Alex Cunningham, also of Invercargill, at the Southland Solo Championships staged on Saturday night. The sweet taste of victory – it's a flavour Grant Tregoning has certainly become accustomed to.

Tregoning added the Southland Solo Championship title to his collection at the Russell Cunningham Properties Oreti Park Speedway 10th Anniversary meeting on Saturday night.

It completes an impressive feat for Tregoning who has won just about every title he's contested this season. The New Zealand Solo crown is the only one to allude the self-confessed speed demon – and that's still stings a little bit.

“I really wanted to win the New Zealand title but had to settle for second,” Tregoning said. “But there's always next year.”

Stratford Speedway Offers Cash for Rollovers PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 19 March 2010 12:52

Stratford Speedway Cash is being offered to Stratford Speedway stockcar drivers for rollovers.

"It's got a bit too tame. Offering cash money may liven things up for the crowd," club president Chris Hill said. "But it has to be a genuine roll, not just hung up on the wall."

The victim and perpetrator (roller and rollee?) will be paid $200 each when a car is deliberately flipped over.

Track officials will judge whether an incident qualifies for payment.

Someone had a go last Saturday, but the car did not flip.

Nelson Speedway Plans Short, Sharp PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 March 2010 12:57

Nelson Speedway The bonus in creating the game is that you also get to make the rules.

That's how it is for promotions manager Karen Carey and the Nelson Speedway Association this weekend. They're staging the Anchor Construction Stock Shock tomorrow and Saturday and there's been an element of fluidity to the format of the meeting.

Traditionally, the Stock Shock has been an invitation-only meeting with a maximum field of 52, split into four groups which rotate through races against each other on the Friday before settling into a 26-car showdown on Saturday.

It's different this weekend, although Carey thinks the format might stay the same despite a combination of circumstances cutting the field.

Leading Drivers Wait For Final Roar PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 February 2010 18:20

Kyle Fraser and the 92R car at this year's World 240s in Rotorua. The country's best superstock drivers are in a holding pattern after rain saw the 2010 New Zealand Championships at Kihikihi postponed before Sunday's finals were run.

The wet and interrupted theme continued what has been a stop-start season for speedway in New Zealand this summer.

Close to 24 hours of rain made the Kihikihi track unfit for racing and organisers have opted to return on February 27 to decide who gets to run the 1NZ car for the next year.

Six Rotorua-based drivers had earned their way into the 26-strong finals field after qualifying on Saturday.

Steve Hampton came through a run-off while Ken Hunter had a win in the yellow group where former New Zealand champion Kyle Fraser and Scott Hewson also qualified to join Andrew Harvey and Dale Robertson.

Simon Joblin on Receiving End at Meeanee PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 January 2010 15:21

SUPERSTOCKS CAN FLY: Simon Joblin's hunt for the North Island title came to an abrupt end when he was rolled in the final at Meeanee, Napier, on Sunday night.Simon Joblin must be wondering why he's been on the receiving end of so many hits since he won his national title at Dunedin three years ago.

Always in the hunt for major titles, Joblin, along with brother Scott, headed into the final heat of the North Island championships at Meeanee, Napier, on Sunday night with both in the running for the first major superstock title of the season.

Scott was first to go, taken out when Hawke's Bay stirrer Steve Jude hit him so hard his car flew through the air. Seconds later, brother Simon's title hopes went out the window when he was also rolled.

The title chase came down to a battle between Palmerston North's Wayne Hemi and Hawke's Bay's Joe Faram with Peter Rees also in the hunt.

Unfortunately for Hemi, with Rees also chasing the title there was no-one to take Faram out and he cruised to second place behind Hemi in the final heat leaving the two drivers locked together level on points.

Hemi, though, with a blown clutch couldn't make the runoff, and his protest against Faram for moving under the red light while the Joblins' cars were being dragged from the track was dismissed.
